This is Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach, California. I was lucky enough to spend a weekend in January glamping in my sister’s RV with her family. The weather was beautiful with sunny 70’s during the day and 50’s at night. Native Californians view this as winter weather and the beach was virtually empty. I, as a Minnesotan, viewed felt the glorious sunshine equivalent to the Caribbean and didn’t think once about it being 30 degrees back home.
It’s always special to spend time with my sister’s family but this was extra special. My niece had just been discharged from the hospital (she is chronically and serioiusly ill) and the RV is rigged for her medical needs. My sister cannot leave southern CA due to her daughter’s needs so having “sister time” is extra special. The RV is called “The Hope Rig.”
Bolsa Chica State Beach is really beautiful and Huntington Beach is known as “Surf City”. There were many surfers in wet suits out in the water. The weekend also brought out many 1970’s spirits with long hair, VW camper vans and motorcycles. They all set up for the day in the parking lot, which charges $15 day for parking.
Thanks to my brother-in-law, meals were fit for a glamper. He made barbecued meats (including brisket and his own smoked sausages), tacos, and full breakfasts! Add in early morning coffee on the sand (albeit in blankets) and it cannot be topped as one of the best glamping locations. Morning coffee is the best when listening to the ocean waves and looking at the sand.
So, next time your sister calls and says, “Want to go camping at Bolsa Chica State Beach?” get on a plane and go! THANK YOU SISTER!
